Neon Nightmare

  • by

Holy smokes! It’s been four years since my last post. Been meaning to post here on a regular basis again. Just one day a week to get back in the flow of things. I figure now would be a good time since I did some art and animation-related stuff last weekend. The stuff in question was the Neon Nightmare art show at the Titmouse Burbank studio on the eve of… Read More »Neon Nightmare

Whoa, what’s with her all of a sudden?

People are so quick to point the finger when others treat them badly that they fail to realize that they themselves can be assholes sometimes. Take me, for instance. I would hope that most folks think I’m a nice gal, but that doesn’t mean I’m incapable of being a pill when a situation arises. As one inevitably did last Friday night: The scene was Dynamic Circus, a figure drawing workshop… Read More »Whoa, what’s with her all of a sudden?

Tiki Girl

Went to Nelson Creative Spaces with the illustrator dream team Leen Isabel and Nguyen Dong for Tiki Girl, a themed costume life drawing event hosted by Pierre Bernard. The model of the evening was Jennifer Fabos Patton, who is practically Queen of the Gallery Girls, so a successful turnout was inevitable. I was satisfied with the fruits of my labor, of ballpoint pen etchings over failed attempts with Palomino Blackwing… Read More »Tiki Girl

CTN 2013 and 2014: a photo essay

  • by

For this photo essay, we’re flashing back to 2013, back to my very first experience at CTN Expo, where I spent most of it working at my cubemate and co-worker David Boudreau’s booth. Sitting next to us, was character designer and animator Craig Knowles, who hails from Manchester, England. When he wasn’t chatting with CTN attendees, he was sketching away on post-its. Here’s a post-it sketch that he gave me.… Read More »CTN 2013 and 2014: a photo essay

The hunt for David Derks at the Villains of Animation Art Show

I arrived at the opening reception of When Good Toons Go Bad: Villains of Animation Art Show an hour into the event, only to wish I had gotten there sooner. For I had just missed the chance of meeting David Derks, the artist of my favorite piece, “Meowrice Makes his Move on Mewsette,” a Gay Purr-ee tribute. I was talking to Phillip Graffham, the organizer of the event, about how… Read More »The hunt for David Derks at the Villains of Animation Art Show

Katherine Brannock shines at Laluzapalooza

I am standing next to the back entrance of the gallery, poring over paintings of skulls on wooden plaques by an artist unfamiliar to me under the moniker Jinx. My eyes gaze for a second in the direction of the front door of the vicinity – perhaps I am looking for my friend April Connors, whom I have brought with me that night – when a beautiful figure glides through… Read More »Katherine Brannock shines at Laluzapalooza

All Outta Bubblegum

The crowd of people congregating outside should have been indication of what lay through the open glass door of Hyaena Gallery. That is, a scene of near-pandemonium reminiscent of my experience browsing through the gift shop of Tokyo Disneyland, so filled to capacity that personal space seemed non-existent, what with people bunched up together like the hydrophilic heads of a cell membrane. This was the start of the opening reception… Read More »All Outta Bubblegum

Risqué {dirty little pictures}

  • by

The above image is of the writing on a black wall that obscures what lies within the Kilsby Gallery of the Long Beach Museum of Art: a series of 8″X10″ artworks that comprise Risqué {dirty little pictures}, the brainchild of artists Nathan Spoor and Jeff McMillan, and LBMA executive director Ron Nelson. I heard about Risqué through a Facebook status update by my co-worker Joe Vaux, one of the show’s… Read More »Risqué {dirty little pictures}

FACES by David Boudreau

Currently going on at the Center Stage Gallery in Burbank is Faces, the first solo exhibition by my cubemate David Boudreau. It features his best celebrity/fictional character caricatures from the past three years. Last week on Friday, September 20, was the opening reception for the show, with David’s friends, fans, and co-workers in attendance. A successful turnout that was very well-deserved, considering David’s talent, and how hard he has worked… Read More »FACES by David Boudreau

Belly Dancer

My friend April Connors has her own private space within Keystone Fine Art Studios in Glendale, where she works as a figure painting and drawing instructor. Every Wednesday night from 7 – 10 PM, she hosts these figure drawing workshops, where the model dresses according to the theme of the evening. I attended her workshop for the first time last week, which was themed “Belly Dancer” and featured Gallery Girls… Read More »Belly Dancer
